A PILGRIMAGE site is set to rise next year on Limasawa Island in Southern Leyte, where the first Catholic mass in the Philippines was held in 1521.

A report by CBCP News said the Diocese of Maasin has started the construction of a seven-storey monument complex to be called the “Shrine and Pilgrim Center with a Tower of Light.”

This is one of the main projects of the diocese for the year-long celebration of the 500 Years of Christianity in the Philippines.

Work started in February 2020. It is targeted to be completed before the local celebration ends in March 2022.

Bishop Prescioso Cantillas of Maasin has appealed for contributions for the project.

“I invite you to give thanks to God for the gift of faith we all have received by donating an amount or construction materials,” Cantillas said.

The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) has determined that the 1521 mass took place in Limasawa. (HDT / SunStar Philippines)
