OVER P14 million worth of illegal drugs were destroyed on Thursday, June 2, 2022, by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), together with the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Department of Justice. The destruction of the illegal drugs, which were seized in various operations over the past months, was held at the Integrated Waste Management Inc. in Trece Martires City in Cavite.Among the illegal drugs were methamphetamine hydrochloride or shabu, marijuana and ecstasy.PDEA Director General Wilkins Villanueva said over the past two years, over P34 billion worth of illegal drugs have already been destroyed through thermal decomposition.Thermal decomposition, or thermolysis, is a process of breaking down chemical compounds by heat. At 1,000 degrees centigrade, all dangerous drugs are totally decomposed or broken down. The destruction of the dangerous drugs is in compliance with the guidelines set on the custody and disposition of seized dangerous drugs required in Section 21, Article II of Republic Act 9165, or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002, and Dangerous Drugs Board Regulation 1, Series of 2002.This is being conducted to ensure that illegal drugs seized during law enforcement operations are not being recycled by erring officials.
