THE low pressure area that was spotted east of Eastern Visayas developed into a tropical depression and was named “Paeng” around 8 a.m. Wednesday, October 26, 2022.

As of 10 a.m., the center of Paeng was located at 965 kilometers east of Eastern Visayas, packing maximum winds of 45 kilometers per hour (km/h) near the center, gusts of up to 55 km/h, and central pressure of 1004 hPa.

Paeng was moving west northwestward slowly, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

The weather bureau added that strong winds may extend outwards up to 300 kilometers from the center of the tropical cyclone.

No Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) has so far been hoisted, but Pagasa said TCWS may be raised for some areas in Eastern Visayas and Bicol Region Thursday morning (October 27) at the earliest.

Pagasa said that as per latest track and intensity forecast of the cyclone, the most likely highest wind signal that will be hoisted is Wind Signal 4.

It added that Paeng was forecast to intensify into a tropical storm Thursday, October 27, 2022. “Further intensification is likely while moving over the Philippine Sea and may reach typhoon category on Saturday.”

The weather bureau also said that Paeng will bring heavy to intense with at times torrential rains over Bicol Region on Friday morning through Saturday morning.

Moderate to heavy with at times intense rains are possible over Eastern Visayas, Mindoro Provinces, Marinduque, Romblon, Quezon, Aurora, Isabela, and Cagayan, while there will be light to moderate with at times heavy rains possible over Rizal, Laguna, Nueva Ecija, Bulacan, Cordillera Administrative Region, and the rest of Visayas and Cagayan Valley, it added.

On Saturday morning through Sunday, heavy to intense with at times torrential rains are possible over Cagayan, Isabela, Apayao, and the northern portion of Aurora, and moderate to heavy with at times intense rains over Ilocos Norte, and the rest of Aurora, Cagayan Valley, and Cordillera Administrative Region.

There will be light to moderate with at times heavy rains in Western Visayas and the rest of Luzon, said Pagasa.

“Under these conditions, flooding and rain-induced landslides are possible, especially in areas that are highly or very highly susceptible to these hazard as identified in hazard maps and in localities with significant antecedent rainfall,” it said in an advisory.

It also said that due to the shear line and the trough of Paeng, heavy rains are possible over Quezon, Bicol Region, Visayas, and the northern and western portions of Mindanao.

Meanwhile, the northeast monsoon will bring strong to gale-force winds over Batanes, Babuyan Islands, and the northern portions of mainland Cagayan, Apayao, and Ilocos Norte in the next 24 hours. (LMY)
