THE three-week voter registration period is not likely to be extended. This is the statement of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) heading into the final week of the voter registration period for the December 2022 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE).”In the matter of extension, it is very unlikely,” said Acting Comelec Spokesman John Rex Laudiangco in a statement. He said this is because Republic Act No. 8189 prohibits any registration activities within 120 days before Election Day.”This prohibition, counted from December 5, 2022, will start on August 7, 2022,” he said.Laudiangco said after the July 23 deadline for voter registration, they still have to post/publish applications, receive opposition to applications, hold Election Registration Board hearings, cleanse multiple registrants, finalize Project of Precincts, and establish polling precincts”This is how limited our timelines are in order to comply with the laws,” said Laudiangco. The voter registration period for the December 5 poll exercise was opened on July 4 and will run until July 23, 2022.Voter registration is open from Mondays to Saturdays, including holidays, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., in all city/municipal Offices of Election Officers.
