DEPARTMENT of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Secretary Ivan John Uy warned the public on Tuesday, May 16, 2023 over the “re-programmed” approach of text scammers in order to obtain their personal information.

In a press conference, Uy said text scammers are now using the SIM registration law to dupe their would-be victims.

“So, dumami na naman iyong mga text scams but most of them now have redirected or re-program their approach, panloloko nila asking people ‘nag register na ba kayo ng SIM card ninyo kung hindi pa click this link and you go to their site, which is a fake site’,” he said.

“They also have exploited in respect to e-wallets na for purportedly you will receive a text coming from e-wallet provider na ‘O, kung nag-reregister na kayo ng SIM card kailangang mag re-register kayo sa e-wallet ninyo in order to be able to activate it’,” Uy added.

Uy said they are hoping that subscribers will register their SIM card to combat these kinds of illegal activities which put the public’s security at risk.

The secretary however maintained that there will no longer be another extension of the SIM registration which will end by July 26.

Beyond July 26, unregistered SIM cards will automatically be deactivated.

As of May 9, the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) said out of the 168,016,400 total number of subscribers in the country as of December 2022, 95,158,637 or 56.64 percent have so far registered.

Uy however said they are targeting 100 million registration. (SunStar Philippines)
