WITH thousands still looking to get registered as voters, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) vowed Friday, July 22, to accommodate as many as it can during the last day of the registration period Saturday, July 23, 2022.In a televised public briefing, acting Comelec spokesman John Rex Laudiangco said their field personnel will do everything possible to successfully register everyone lined up in local Offices of the Election Officer (OEOs).”Our election officers, as much as possible, will try to accommodate everyone lined up until 5 in the afternoon,” said Laudiangco.”Rest assured that we will do everything we can so that we can enlist everyone,” he added.July 23 is the last day of the voter registration period for the December 2022 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) polls.Under Comelec Resolution 10798, during the last day of registration, if at 3 p.m. of July 23, 2022, there are still persons waiting in line to file their application for registration within the 30-meter radius from the OEO, the Election Assistant (EA) shall list down their names consecutively numbered.Listed applicants shall, then, be called by announcing each name repeatedly three times in the order in which they were listed.Any applicant who is not present when his/her name is called will no longer be allowed to file his/her application. If the applicant is present when his/her name is called, his/her application will be processed and his/her biometrics data captured.”The same shall continue until all those listed shall have been processed,” said the Comelec. But as to the possibility of the deadline being extended, the poll official reiterated that there will be none.He said this is because of the prohibition of any voter registration activities 120 days before Election Day or by August 7.”If we follow this timeline, we will only have a few days left to do our other voter registration processes. Thus, it is unlikely that there will be an extension,” said Laudiangco.Data from the Comelec-Election and Barangay Affairs Department show that there have been 2,119,878 new registrants nationwide, as of July 20.This is more than the Comelec’s recalibrated target of 2,067,351 new barangay and SK voter registrants.
