THE Court of Appeals (CA) has denied the motion for reconsideration filed by Rappler chief executive officer and founder Maria Ressa and former researcher Reynaldo Santos over their conviction for cyber libel charges.

The CA affirmed its decision issued on July 7, 2022, which affirms the decision of the Manila Regional Trial Court Branch 46, which convicted the two for cyber libel.

The Manila court gave each an indeterminate penalty of imprisonment ranging from six months to six years and eight months.

The charges were filed by businessman Wilfredo Keng. It stemmed from a story published by Rappler in 2012 entitled “CJ using SUVs of ‘controversial businessmen.”

It was referring to impeached Chief Justice Renato Corona.

Keng was one of the businessmen mentioned in the article. He allegedly lent Corona one of his luxury vehicles. It was also mentioned that Keng was “under surveillance” over his alleged involvement in human trafficking and drug smuggling. (SunStar Philippines)
