ABRA has declared a state of calamity a day after a magnitude 7 earthquake hit the province Wednesday, July 27, 2022.The 11th Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Abra passed a resolution on Thursday, July 28, 2022, declaring the entire province under a state of calamity due to massive destruction caused by the magnitude 7 earthquake.In the resolution, it said that a report from the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office stated that 80 percent of the total population of Abra and major infrastructure facilities were severely damaged.”In order for the Provincial Government of Abra to immediately address the needs of the people in the aftermath of the earthquake, it is imperative to declare the entire province under a state of calamity,” the resolution read.In a Department of Social Welfare and Development report, nearly 5,000 families or around 21,000 individuals in Ilocos and Cordillera regions were affected by the effects of the tremor. It said figures are still expected to go up as more reports start to come in.On Thursday, a magnitude 5.0 earthquake also hit Tayum, Abra at 4:02 a.m.Authorities continue to advise residents of the province to take precautionary measures as aftershocks are still imminent.
