TEN out of the 17 regions in the country have shown an increase in dengue cases, based on the data of the Department of Health (DOH).In a statement Friday, June 10, 2022, majority of regions have recorded more dengue cases compared to the numbers in 2021.”Ten out of the 17 regions showed increasing cases of dengue,” said the DOH.The regions are Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Mimaropa, Bicol Region, Western Visayas, Central Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, Davao Region, Cordillera Administrative Region and Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.Overall, the DOH said there were 34,938 dengue cases reported from January 1 to May 21, 2022.”Cumulatively, cases this year are 23-percent higher compared to the reported cases during the same period in 2021, which was 28,336,” said the DOH.Most of the dengue cases were reported from Central Visayas with 4,544 (13 percent), Central Luzon with 4,312 (12 percent) and Zamboanga Peninsula with 3,215 (nine percent).A total of 180 deaths due to dengue were also reported during the said period. In a virtual press briefing, Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said the higher number of dengue cases may be attributed to the recent dry season.”There were several water supply uninterruptions so people tend to store more water in containers, which is where dengue carrying mosquitoes thrive,” said.
