The forthcoming film has already drawn notable talent with director Shawn Levy and lead actor Ryan Gosling. However, it seems they are just the beginning of the high-profile contributors. A new report reveals that a major Hollywood icon assisted in filming a key sequence, highlighting the enduring pull of the Star Wars franchise while offering a hint of what audiences can expect.

A recent profile on Levy featured an unexpected appearance by the actor famous for playing Ethan Hunt. According to the article, “Tom Cruise was up to his ankles in mud and pond water,” and “He wore a look of great concentration as he stooped over a digital camera, trying to frame the perfect shot. Shawn Levy glanced around in slight disbelief.”

Reportedly, Tom Cruise helped capture a scene for Starfighter, and it is a pivotal moment for the saga: a lightsaber duel. “Last week Steven Spielberg was here,” Levy states in the piece. “And now Tom Cruise is wielding a camera, ruining his very nice shoes.”

Details about Starfighter remain scarce, but this story offers more clues than it initially seems. It was previously known that the movie involved several aquatic scenes, as evidenced by the extensive ocean views in behind-the-scenes photos shared by Levy. Yet, aside from wondering why lightsabers feature in a film about starfighter combat, the description of mud and pond water evokes a specific setting: the boggy swamps of Dagobah, where Yoda instructed Luke Skywalker in The Empire Strikes Back.

Is Starfighter revisiting this famous world, or will it introduce a new soggy environment? While there is little concrete information, a lightsaber duel filmed by Tom Cruise promises to be striking no matter where it takes place, even without the participants removing any prosthetic masks.

Star Wars: Starfighter premieres in theaters on May 28, 2027.
