On Monday, a debate devolved into a brawl as legislators pulled hair, exchanged blows, and shoved one another across the dais—following an opposition protest over Mexico City’s transparency institute that erupted into chaos.

Footage from inside the legislative chamber showed the disagreement turning violent in seconds; some lawmakers lunged at each other while others stood back to film the scuffle.

Reuters reported that the altercation broke out during discussions about dismantling Mexico City’s transparency institute.

The conflict began when one female legislator grabbed another’s hand, prompting the second woman to yank her hand away and elbow the first in the stomach.

In retaliation, the first woman struck the second on the back before seizing her hair as the fight intensified.

A male lawmaker stepped in to try to pry her hand loose, but more legislators rushed forward as pushing spread across the dais.

Several women were seen in the fray while bystanders held up phones to record the chaos.

Legislators from the opposition National Action Party had taken over the podium to protest the measure at the center of the debate.

The opposition accused Morena—the ruling party—of violating an agreement to create a new transparency body, which sparked the podium occupation.

The session fell apart as shouting escalated, and rival groups clashed throughout the chamber.

Local media reported that the meeting was ultimately suspended and moved to another venue so lawmakers could resume deliberations.
