Jeremy Corbyn, previously the leader of the UK Labour Party and later expelled due to antisemitism allegations, was observed on Sunday attempting to exert influence in New York City politics.
This association between Mamdani and Corbyn emerged just days before the commencement of voting in the New York City mayoral contest, in which Mamdani is positioned as the progressive alternative to the Democratic candidates.
Known for his criticism of Israel’s military actions in Gaza and alignment with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), much like Corbyn, Mamdani has faced
Corbyn, who currently serves as an independent Member of Parliament, publicly declared his backing for Mamdani on Sunday through Facebook, sharing a picture of himself displaying a “North London 4 Zohran” shirt.
The Facebook post encouraged, “Let’s get Zohran over the finish line for a New York that’s affordable for all!”
One social media user remarked, “Corbyn supporting Mamdani. What a surprise.” Another inquired, “Why are you interfering with influencing politics in New York?”
Additionally, Corbyn disseminated a phone-banking link directing to a website managed by the NYC chapter of the DSA, which is calling on volunteers to engage voters for Mamdani.
The website states: “Join NYC-DSA and Jeremy Corbyn, former , as we call New Yorkers to get out the vote for Zohran Mamdani for mayor. We’re just two days from election day, and every conversation pushes us closer to winning a better New York.”
Corbyn’s extensively documented past concerning antisemitism allegations dates back to 2020, when the UK’s Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) concluded that the Labour Party, during his tenure as leader, had engaged in illegal discriminatory actions against its Jewish members.
In 2024, Corbyn faced suspension and subsequent formal expulsion from the Labour Party due to his reaction to the aforementioned report. Since then, he has established a new left-leaning political party named “Your Party” and consistently refutes all accusations of antisemitism.
In response to this collaboration, a former New York Governor and mayoral candidate swiftly criticized Mamdani’s choice in a post on X.
He wrote: “Having Jeremy Corbyn — an individual whose party was determined to have perpetrated unlawful discriminatory acts against Jewish people while he was leader – phone-banking for @ZohranKMamdani conveys all necessary information.
New York does not require politics based on moral compromise. We need leadership that denounces antisemitism, extremism, and division in all their manifestations and locations.”
Concurrently, a week before the election, the Coolidge Reagan Foundation, a campaign finance watchdog group, lodged two , asserting he obtained unlawful donations from international contributors.
The Mamdani campaign asserts that any concerns pertaining to financial contributions have been addressed.
