SunStar Cebu received awards for Best in Photojournalism, Best in Business and Economic Reporting, and Best Editorial Page for the daily category during the awarding ceremony held at Century Park Hotel in Manila on Monday, Oct. 24, 2022.
SunStar Pampanga won the Best Edited Community Newspaper award.
For SunStar Cebu, among the poignant and powerful images the award-giving body recognized were the commuters risking their lives as they ran after a bus, a health worker kneeling in the middle of an empty road out of exhaustion, firefighters rescuing an injured resident as a huge explosion goes off at the back, and a woman praying in front of empty chairs.
“The paper’s insistence to rely on their talented pool of photographers rather than using handouts and images grabbed from social media which seems to be the norm in Philippine publications these days has certainly rewarded them. The pictures are vibrant and are always in the thick of action. A great use of visuals to transport the readers into the actual story,” the body said.
The PPI said SunStar Cebu’s business and economic reporting offers the reader big picture viewpoints and analyses from various perspectives that help enrich one’s understanding of business activity in and around the community.
On the editorial page, the Cebu-based entity offers an insightful, well-written commentary on diverse local and national issues that affect Cebuanos in all walks of life.
Mindanao Times bagged the Best in Reporting on Migration Issues and Best in Environmental Reporting awards.
For the weekly category, the winners were Baguio Chronicle, Best in Reporting for Migration Issues, Best Editorial Page and Best Edited Community Paper; Metro Post — Best in Photojournalism; Palawan News, Best in Environmental Reporting; and Herald Express, Best in Business and Economic Reporting.
