In a statement, recruitment analyst Emmanuel Geslani said there is a strong possibility that there will be fewer OFWs that will be recruited to work in Taiwan due to the increase in fees set by the Manila Economic and Cultural Office (Meco).
“The move to raise fees will discourage Taiwan employers and brokers to get Filipinos for jobs,” said Geslani.
He noted how the Taiwan Employment Services Institute Association, which is an organization of foreign recruitment agencies, find the new Meco accreditation and verification fees as “exorbitant.”
Meco earlier increased the accreditation and verification fees from NT 1,375 (P2,500) to NT 5,740 (P10,400).
“This may turn off Taiwan brokers as each order for OFWs will need new accreditation fees,” said Geslani.
In October, Geslani noted how Taiwan has been the top OFW destination for 2022 so far.
Geslani added that an average of 3,000 OFWs are flying monthly to Taiwan for employment opportunities. (SunStar Philippines)
