POLL watchdogs were up in arms over the looming postponement of the December 2022 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE).In separate interviews, the National Movement for Free Elections (Namfrel) and Legal Network for Truthful Elections (Lente) said they do not agree with the decision of lawmakers as this is against the principles of democracy.”This is very disappointing and a blow to democracy. It weakens the citizens to hold their local elected officials to account,” said Namfrel Secretary General Eric Alvia.”This consistent delay in the BSKE contravenes the standard of periodic elections. Further postponement of the BSKE is an attack against democracy and community power,” said Lente Executive Director Rona Caritos.Alvia said the decision of lawmakers only shows how they value the importance of holding elections.”This reflects the sincerity of our legislators’ commitment to the electorate,” said Alvia. For its part, Lente said they are still hoping for a change of heart by the Marcos administration.”Lente reiterates its call to push through with the barangay and SK elections this coming December 2022,” said Caritos.Earlier in the week, the Senate and House of Representatives agreed to move the BSKE to October 2023.The ratified measure is now set to be sent to Malacañang for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s signature.
