MORE than 350 persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) were released on Wednesday, October 26, 2022, from various facilities under the Bureau of Corrections (Bucor), Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla said.

Remulla said out of the total 357 released, 122 were under parole and 235 attained their maximum sentence.

He said 102 were from the New Bilibid Prison, 22 from Correctional Institution for Women, 20 from San Ramos Prison and Penal Farm in Zamboanga City, 49 from Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm in Puerto Princesa City in Palawan, 28 from Leyte Regional Prison and 136 from Davao Prison and Penal Farm.

Remulla said 450 PDLs were supposed to be released on Wednesday but it did not materialize due to unaccomplished clearance of the others.

He said more PDLs are expected to be released in the coming months in a bid to decongest the country’s jail facilities.

In September, for the first time under the administration of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., 371 PDLs were also released from various facilities of the Bucor. (SunStar Philippines)
