PRESIDENT Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has approved the postponement of the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections (BSKE) from December 2022 to October 2023.

Marcos signed on Monday, October 10, 2022, Republic Act (RA) 11935, which stated that the BSKE will be held on the last Monday of October 2023 and every three years thereafter.

RA 11935 also stated that the term of office of the barangay and SK officials “elected under this Act shall commence at noon of November 30 next following their election.”

Marcos said that until the new set of officials are elected, the incumbent barangay and SK officials must remain in their office, unless sooner removed or suspended for cause.

The law also stated that the amount needed for the implementation of RA 11935 shall be taken from the appropriations of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) under the General Appropriations Act.

The act will take effect immediately after publication either in the Official Gazette or in two newspapers of general circulation.

RA 11935 is a consolidation of House Bill 4673 and Senate Bill 1306, which were passed separately by the two houses of Congress on September 28, 2022. (LMY)
