IN A bid to help persons with disabilities (PWDs) gain more employment opportunities, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) said Friday, July 22, 2022, that it will push for higher quotas in public and private sectors.In his statement for the National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Week, Labor Secretary Bienvenido Laguesma said they will be pushing for amendments in the Magna Carta for Disabled Persons.”We vow to continue pushing for the rights of the workers with disabilities towards their personal and societal advancement,” said Laguesma.In particular, he said they would want to increase the minimum number of workers with disabilities in government and large companies.”We support the move to increase from one percent to at least two percent the quota in employing PWDs in all government positions,” said the labor chief.”We also support the call to make it mandatory for private establishments with over 100 employees to allocate 1 percent for PWDs,” added Laguesma.Under Republic Act 10524, at least one percent of all positions to all government agencies, offices, or corporations shall be reserved for PWDs.On the other hand, private corporations with more than 100 employees are encouraged to reserve at least one percent of all positions for PWDs.
