OVER 760,000 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) have been deployed by the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) in just the first six months of the Marcos administration.

In a statement, DMW Secretary Susan Ople said more than 760,000 OFWs have been deployed between July and December 2022.

“Some 766,290 OFWs were able to get decent jobs abroad through the DMW from July to December,” said Ople.

In contrast, the DMW chief said over 6,000 distressed OFWs have been repatriated by the Marcos administration.

“There were 6,341 distressed OFWs that were able to return home during the same period,” said Ople.

Previously, OFW group Migrante International assailed the Marcos government for opting to continue the country’s labor export policy.

This, the group said, is instead of prioritizing the creation of local job opportunities.

“The DMW’s record so far shows that the second Marcos regime does not seek to create decent jobs in the Philippines, but to continue the government’s dependence on the remittances of overseas Filipinos,” it stressed in a previous statement.

“The present Marcos regime does not want to make up for the first Marcos regime’s inauguration of labor export, but wants to continue this policy, despite almost 50 years that show its failure in creating development in the country,” Migrante furthered. (HDT/SunStar Philippines)
