CASES of dengue are on the rise in Western Visayas, as the region has now seen a 36 percent increase compared to last year, according to the Department of Health (DOH).In a radio interview, Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said they have observed a spike in dengue cases in Western Visayas.”We already alerted our regional director in Western Visayas to closely monitor the situation there,” said Duque.”Together with the local government units there, we need to monitor these areas, where cases are increasing,” he added.Data show that for January 1 to May 7, there are 1,034 dengue cases in Western Visayas. This is 36 percent higher compared to the 758 dengue cases reported in the region during the same period last year.A total of 18 deaths have also been reported this year, including four in just over the past week. But Duque said the hospitals in the region are not overwhelmed by dengue patients, because there are many health facilities available, particularly those used during the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic.”The experience we had during the Covid-19 surges weren’t useless. It enhanced our capacities and capabilities,” said Duque. He also reiterated the 4S strategy of the DOH in combating the dengue virus.Duque said 4S stands for “Search and Destroy” mosquito breeding places, “Secure Self Protection” from mosquito bite, “Seek Early Consultation” when signs and symptoms of dengue occur, and “Say Yes to Fogging” only as a last resort when there is an impending outbreak.
