ASIDE from dengue cases, another vector-borne disease is also on the rise in the country.Based on the latest disease surveillance report, the Department of Health (DOH) reported that 318 chikungunya cases were reported from the period of January 1 to July 23, 2022.This was 389-percent higher than the 65 cases during the same period in 2021.Calabarzon had the highest number of chikungunya cases with 102.Also recording high numbers were Central Visayas with 55 cases, Western Visayas with 50 cases and Davao Region with 50 cases.On the other hand, seeing the biggest jump in chikungunya cases from last year was also Calabarzon at 102 from only one last year (10,100 percent).Completing the top three regions were Western Visayas (1 to 50) at 4,900 percent, and Central Visayas (10 to 55) at 450 percent.One death due to chikungunya was also recorded this year with a case fatality rate of 0.3 percent.During the same period in 2021, no deaths were caused by chikungunya.Chikungunya is a viral disease transmitted to humans by infected mosquitoes and causes fever and severe joint pain.
