Warning: This post contains spoilers for Captain America: Brave New World.

In a surprising plot twist in Captain America: Brave New World, Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes is running for Congress. This is a significant shift for a character with a troubled past, including brainwashing by Nazis and involvement in numerous deaths, notably the assassination of Tony Stark’s parents. However, a checkered past hasn’t stopped many from achieving political office in the U.S.

Previously, Bucky was seen attempting to atone for his actions while supporting Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), the new Captain America, in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Following Steve Rogers’ (Chris Evans) retirement in Avengers: Endgame, Bucky struggled to find his purpose.

Bucky’s candidacy isn’t entirely unexpected. His striking appearance, memorable nickname, enhanced abilities (including super strength and a Vibranium arm), and connections to Wakanda make him a compelling candidate. His military experience, though controversial, adds to his profile. At 108 years old, he possesses considerable life experience. He’s a well-rounded package.

Fan speculation about Bucky’s future MCU role included this political path. Wyatt Russell reportedly hinted last summer that Bucky was now a congressman. Brave New World confirms he’s at least pursuing this.

However, Bucky’s political aspirations clash with his actions in the upcoming film. In this May release, Bucky joins forces with morally ambiguous characters—Yelena (Florence Pugh), Red Guardian (David Harbour), and John Walker (Russell)—forming an unconventional team. His involvement in actions like destroying cars with missiles presents a challenge to his political image, especially after the President’s destructive outburst at the end of Brave New World.

How Bucky addresses these inconsistencies with voters remains to be seen.
