The Team Approach

Australia is facing a mental health crisis, with many people unable to access the care they need. Recent data shows that 42% of those requiring mental health services delayed or avoided treatment in 2022-23, with 28% citing cost as a barrier. This highlights the importance of readily available workplace counselling, according to Geelong-based EAP provider, The Team Approach.

Louise Lugsdin, founder of The Team Approach, stresses the need for companies to prioritize employee wellbeing in this crisis. “Accessible, in-house support systems are crucial,” she says. “Businesses that prioritize mental health are not only wise but progressive, creating a supportive and productive workplace.”

Workplace and personal stressors, including grief, divorce, or conflicts, can significantly impact productivity. Absenteeism and presenteeism, where employees are present but not fully productive, are costly for businesses. Lugsdin explains: “In Australia, employees typically take six unscheduled absence days annually, costing a business with 12 employees around AUD 24,678.16 per year. The hidden costs of presenteeism are even more alarming. A fully disengaged employee costs 34% of their annual salary, amounting to AUD 30,301.48 per employee. In a workplace of 12 employees, with four disengaged members, the annual cost is approximately AUD 121,205.92. Combined, absenteeism and presenteeism cost a business with 12 employees around AUD 145,884.08 a year, excluding the additional cost of hiring new staff if someone quits.”

An Employee Assistance Program (EAP) offers a proactive solution, providing free counselling sessions and support strategies to foster a mentally healthy workplace. Contrary to popular belief, counselling is not only for crises. Qualified counsellors can assist with goal setting, stress management, conflict resolution, and provide a confidential space for employees to discuss concerns.

Implementing an EAP is a financially sound decision. In Australia, EAPs are considered a fringe benefit, allowing employers to claim an income tax deduction on the costs. Evidence suggests that businesses with EAPs experience lower absenteeism and higher employee retention. Proactively managing psychosocial hazards protects workers and enhances organisational performance and productivity.

Reducing costs should be a priority. An EAP supports the prevention and management of mental health issues, reducing absenteeism and presenteeism. It’s a progressive step that demonstrates commitment to a mentally healthy workplace.
